What is Brain Fog?
Do you feel as if you’re walking around in a daze? You can’t think clearly. It’s difficult to concentrate. You feel spaced out, confused. If so, you may be experiencing “brain fog.
Brain fog is very common, affecting many people of all ages and all walks of life. It interferes with our performance at home, school, and work. When prolonged, it can undermine your self-esteem and confidence, possibly lead to depression.
Brain Fog Symptoms
The symptoms of brain fog are many. Do you recognize yourself in any of these symptoms?
- You feel like you’re walking around in a fog
- It’s difficult for you to think clearly
- Your brain feels like there are cobwebs in it
- Your thinking feels slow, sluggish, cloudy, fuzzy
- It's hard for you to focus or concentrate
- Your attention span has decreased
- You’re more forgetful, more absentminded
- Your mind just feels tired
- You have a loss of appetite
- You feel dazed, dull, flat
- You feel spaced out, dreamy
- There’s a feeling of detachment or unreality
- You’re worrying more, feeling fearful
- You feel anxious and/or mildly depressed
Brain Fog Causes
You can suffer from brain fog, because of either physical, emotional, biochemical, or environmental causes. The emotional causes include:
- Prolonged stress
- Continuing worry and anxious thought
- Lack of sleep because of worry and stress
- Depression
- Unresolved issues and conflicts
- Denial of feelings
The stress of anxiety and worry activates the nervous system causing stress hormones to flood your body. This can lead to physical, emotional, and mental overstimulation. Your body feels like it’s racing. You feel on edge. You can’t stop your worrisome thoughts. In the East, they would say “your chi has gone to your head”. Grounding especially helps brain fog caused by emotional issues, because it redistributes your energy back into your body, helping you to return to calm in the here and now.
Coping with Brain Fog
If your brain fog is caused by nutritional deficiencies, neurotoxicity, chronic infection, chronic disease, or environmental factors, body grounding exercises can help to clear your mind and bring you into the here and now while you work to restore your health.
For treating brain fog caused by emotional issues such as stress and anxiety, it's important to recognize that brain fog is a signal that you need to change your life. Here are some important steps you can take:
- Train your thinking to stop immediately negative and worrisome thoughts
- Train yourself instead to think constructively, positively
- Learn to immediately and effectively deal with stressful situations
- Reduce stress by slowing your life down
- Do journal writing as a way to explore difficult feelings and issues
- Change your lifestyle to allow daily periods of relaxation
- Balance work with fun, play, recreation
- Get proper nutrition and adequate sleep to restore your body
- When especially stressed, take 10 easy, slow, deep breathes to calm the nervous system
- Do body grounding exercises
- Become more physical in your daily life: do exercise, yoga, tai chi, etc.
