About Being Ungrounded

When we are not grounded, we are out of touch with our world and our bodies. We refuse life's invitation to become immersed in a world of sensory aliveness, immediacy, and aliveness.

When we are ungrounded, our energy is concentrated more in our heads. We are not fuflly embodied.

An Audio Message from the Author

Sometimes we experience this as being spaced out, living as if in a dream, absent-minded, klutzy- unaware of our bodies. Sometimes we experience this 'spaciness' as even being unaware of our legs and feet or simply feeling numb to life below the neckline. We live from within the tower of the mind content to spend our lives in fantasy or other unbalanced intellectual pursuits. This is not to say that intellect and fantasy have no place in our lives.. Rather it is to suggest that the life of the mind be integrated and balanced with the life of the body.

Sometimes feelings of stress, anxiety, or panic will lead to being ungrounded. We feel harried, scattered, 'running around like a chicken with its head cut off.' We can't slow down our thoughts. Our bodies are always on the move.

An ungrounded life is a life whose mind and heart and body are not integrated. The lack of integration is experienced as an imbalance of energy distribution. Energy is unevenly distributed throughout the physical organism. The bulk of energy functions as the head's ceaseless mental. Our awareness is centered in the head, rather than distributed throughout our body.

Getting Grounded

To become fully alive, we need to step down from the head, and dip our whole selves into the body, its senses, the world, and the waters of life. We need to be grounded.

Being grounded is fundamental to well-being and a balanced life. Grounding also is an important component of any effort to remedy stress, anxiety, panic attacks or insominia, because grounding directs the energy and awareness back into the body thereby helping to manage stress, catastrophic thinking, and panic.

If you are unhappy with being ungrounded, you can do something about it! Getting grounded is a skill which you can develop, and make a way of life. To become grounded, you need to apply yourself to exercises that develop grounding such as are found in...
